Moon Cake Festival

It's Moon Cake Festival time (also known as Mid-Autumn Festival) !!!

For those of you who don't know what this is, Moon Cake Festival Day is the day Chinese people eat mooncakes with their families.  It occurs on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese Calendar, which is when the moon is at it's fullest, roundest, and brightest time.

Here is a picture of a mooncake!

These baked goods contain lotus seed paste inside of them.  Most of them have an egg yolk in the middle, which represents the round moon.
Here's a little history behind these moon cakes:
No one knows the real story, but it runs along these lines......
When China was ruled by the Mongols, during the 14th century (Yuan dynasty), they wanted a rebellion.  The leaders from the previous dynasty (Sung), planned a secret rebellion by putting secret messages about the plan to revolt in mooncakes.  People saw these messages and on the day of the Moon Cake Festival, they all came together and overthrew the government.

Well, there's some information for you
 guys! Enjoy your mooncakes!

P.S. If you guys know me personally, you know for sure that I would mention the calorie content of these mooncakes....100 calories for 1/8 of a cake so 800 for the whole thing!!

and here's a little treat:

HELLO KITTY MOONCAKES!!!! how cute..!

The Night-Blooming Cereus

Sorry that I haven't been posting anything for a while.  I've been awfully busy, and there hasn't been anything interesting to write about... until now!

I usually don't pay much attention to the plethora of plants my mom grows inside my house.  There are plants EVERYWHERE. However, something incredible happened last night.

My mom called me to go downstairs to take a picture for my aunt.  I went downstairs to find her standing next to a huge plant.  The leaves weren't appealing at all, but there was ONE huge flower on it.  It was beautiful!  I then asked her why I needed to take a picture for my aunt, and she said that the flower wouldn't be blooming anymore by tomorrow.  Very odd right?  Later, I learned that the flower only blooms at night.  And it doesn't bloom every night. It only blooms ONCE, then it closes up.  But when it does bloom, it only blooms at night.

This plant is often overlooked because it's not appealing when it doesn't have flowers, which is during the daytime, when people can see it.  Here is a picture of it:

Yea, pretty ugly eh? There are actually two flowers here, but the one in the back is closed up.  That one actually opened a few days ago. However, I missed it when it bloomed.

Poor flower... only alive for one night.

On the bright side, here is a picture of the night-blooming cereus!

It not only is pretty, but it smells so good.  You can smell it about 10-15 feet away.  For those of you who want to grow one, you can't buy them at stores.  The only way you can grow one is if you cut a stem from someone who has one and plant it in soil.

So far, this is the coolest plant I've ever heard about.  Have you ever heard of the night-blooming cereus or know about any other cool plants?

THE CHOCOLATE ROOM

For those of you who live in Brooklyn and believe it's quite boring, here's a place that may remind you of the exciting and spectacular city, Manhattan! If you like Max Brenner, you'll definitely love The Chocolate Room!

The Chocolate Room was named the 2009 Best Dessert Cafe in New York by Zagat. They have mouth-watering chocolate desserts from fondues and puddings to cakes and sundaes. The Chocolate Room also offers wine, coffee, tea and hot chocolate (their vanilla latte is awesome!). They also sell Knipschildt Chocolates, which are little pieces of chocolate that are named using female first names (Kelly, Donna, Patricia). The place is beautifully decorated and is great for a romantic night after dinner or a hangout with friends.

They have two locations:

The Chocolate Room in Park Slope
86 Fifth Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11217

The Chocolate Room in Cobble Hill
269 Court Street
Brooklyn, NY 11231

Sometimes, it just takes a little bit of exploring to realize how great Brooklyn really is.

PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES RECIPE

So a few months ago I tried a recipe for red velvet cake from Sephora. Oh what a bad idea it was. It turned out to be a disaster- the cake was flat and it tasted like clay. The only good part was that it was actually red. So ever since then, I've been trying to find recipes that actually work. This recipe for peanut butter cookies actually works and is quite yummy (I tested it!). And so I would like to share it with you guys!

Peanut Butter Cookies (about an hour)

Ingredients:
1- 3/4 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
3/4 cup peanut butter (12 ounces)
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (4 ounces)
1-1/2 cups light brown sugar, firmly packed (5 ounces)
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 C)
2) Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl; set aside.
3) Place peanut butter, butter, and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer with a beater attachment. Beat on medium until light and fluffy. Scrape sides.
4) Beat in eggs, one at a time, on medium speed, scrape sides as needed.
5) Mix in vanilla extract.
6) Pour 1/2 flour mixture into mixing bowl and beat on low until combined. Scrape sides. Pour remaining flour mixture into mixing bowl and beat on low until combined. Scrape sides and beat on medium speed for 20 seconds.
7) Drop by spoonful onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until they look lightly golden brown.
8) Remove to cooling rack, let sit for 2-3 minutes and then remove the cookies.

**REMEMBER TO BE VERY ACCURATE with your measurements. Never eye a certain amount when it comes to baking, for a little too much of something will ruin the end product.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!

Lady Gaga!

For those of you who believe Lady Gaga is a joke, she is not! She is truly talented and here's proof-

but I do admit that the elephant on her head does look ridiculous
